India is the birth place of Chicken Tikka Masala and Curries. Indian foods are prepared with a blend of finely mixed spices quite popular across the region. The spices develop the rich taste in Indian food enough to boggle your mind. The ever-increasing fan base of Indian food around the New York city is steadily increasing because of the large number of Indians who traveled to the land of dreams. The Indians also brought their very own vibrant, colorful, and aromatic authentic dishes for the people in the West. While most of the Indian population is Vegetarian, Indian food is great for people who are looking for vegan or vegetarian food option. If you are a Meat lover, don't get disappointed yet. Indian food also boasts of some popular non-vegetarian dishes too. Few examples are the famous Butter Chicken, Mutton Biryani and Tandoori Chicken are enough to satisfy your taste buds.

TL;DR, Ordered something too spicy, gave me the less spicy version free of charge. I have to rate these guys 5 stars just because of their generosity. I was trying the Chana Saag, and I got the step above mild on the spicy scale. Being the wimp I was, when I got the dish, it was much too spicy for me. I managed to down a few bites and then had to stop, it was pretty uncomfortable. The waiter came by asking if we were enjoying everything and I commented on how wimpy I was when it came to spice. So he took my dish to the kitchen, and they made me a new bowl (now mild) for no extra charge. That was so incredibly cool of the waiter and the cooks there. They have my business!!

I have been a huge fan of Kathmandu since they opened. In fact I stopped going to Bombay House because the food was so delicious and naan amazing. However the last 3 times I've been I have been seriously disappointed. Not sure what has changed but the taste is off. I've started going back to Bombay. But I will put in a plug for the service. Nice and attentive.

Went to this place to eat with friends on a Sunday evening. The place wasn't pack, but the food did take a while for us to get. When the waiters set the food down they don't really tell us what it was. We had to ask about everything that was served to us. The food there was delicious though. I would recommend getting the butter chicken because that is my favorite dish there. A quick warning though, if you do the briannie rice and can't really handle spicy that well but want a little spicy kick to it I would recommend you getting mild. Things I wouldn't Recommend getting the tandoori chicken though. It was kinda dry for me. All in all I would return to this place again for the food.

I went to eat here with 4 other friends on a Friday evening. It was about three quarter full, so we got the table right away even without reservation. My first impression was that the tables were arranged very close together. I could hear clearly the conversations from the next table and they were not even talking loudly. There were a lot of Nepalese decorations around the place. Even the tv were showing Nepalese beautiful landscape slides. It took them exactly 30 minutes to get our food and we didn't even ordered that much. We had Chicken Butter. It was the best meal we had that evening but not mind blowing out-of-this-world good. The serving was slightly on the smaller side. It came with either Naan bread or rice. We also had Lamb Korma. It was decent. The lamb was tender but i thought the spices were a bit bland. Another dish was Saag Paneer, which was spinach in cheese paneer, garlic and spices. It was quite spicy but rather good. Finally we had Chicken Biryani, which most of us think could be better. The bill came about 60 dollars for 5 of us, and we left feeling stuffed. I would come again but probably not so soon.

Very good Indian food. Very consistent. Love that they give you nan and rice with every entree. I am hooked on the chicken coconut korma.

We've been to quite a few Indian restaurants in the area and have never been too impressed with the food or the service. Both are great at Kathmandu! We went for their lunch buffet. It was a great price for a large variety of really delicious food. They had classics like Tikka Masala and my favorite Saag Paneer and of course the mango pudding is delicious! We really really liked it. The food was delicious and the service was great! Kept our table clear and our waters full but weren't pushy and didn't interrupt us. Loved it! This is our current favorite indian place in the area.

Buffet Review Highlights: Chickpea Salad, Tandoori Chicken, Butter Chicken Overall, the flavors here weren't as amenable to my palate as, say, Saffron Valley. But that's just me. Oh and btw, disregard my 'holier than thou' review from 2010. I was such a douche. But I still stand by my use of the tiffin box. I should take that everywhere as a doggy bag.
(3)Hilary P.
My husband and I go here quite often. The food is consistently delicious. You can't go wrong here. My only complaint is that sometimes the wait for the food/service can be longer than desired. It's definitely worth the wait though! Our personal favorites: Channa Paneer Masala Everest Chicken Chicken Coconut Korma
(5)Scott K.
Outstanding food and service. Mango drinks were wonderful. I had the Everest chicken which was delicious, naan, which was also excellent, and a mango drink which was also delicious. Service was fast and the food looked very appealing. I ordered my spice level at medium and I generally like a generous amount of spice but this was pretty darned hot. They brought a full pitcher of ice water in addition to the mango drink and it was a good thing. It was rather hot. Best food I had in the three days I was in SLC. Will definitely come back on any return trips to SLC.
(5)Christine F.
Uh, yum. Their tandoori chicken is no joke. Their naan--also no joke. Everything about this place is great. Reasonable prices. I've heard their lunch buffet is what dreams are made of.
(4)Rachael L.
My favorite restaurant in SLC. The food, service, atmosphere are always spot on. Super friendly staff. Buffet is wonderful also, lots of options, hot and fresh. Be prepared to stuff yourself silly here. And still have leftovers. 6 stars!
(5)Shirley W.
The best Indian/Nepali restaurant! I usually come visit SLC at least 2 twice a year and I ALWAYS come here to have at least one meal before I leave. The food is great and the staff is extremely friendly and helpful too. The staff are very knowledgeable about the ingredients they use in their food. I have quite a few allergies (gluten, sesame, certain nuts..) and they were more then happy to go through the menu to let me know what I can have. Another plus side is that they never charge extra making my dishes gluten free. This place is a must try!
(5)Kelci R.
We love this place- best Indian in town for sure! Chicken tikka masala is great! The lunch buffets is a great start if you don't know what you like or haven't had Indian before, you can sample lots of dishes and the price is very reasonable.
(5)Parissa A.
Went last night wasn't too busy. The restaurant had a certain homey charm to it. It was our first time as we usually do Bombay. It took a minute for someone to seat us as they were doing to go orders. Got the mango lassi. Very good! Food was great I got my usual Indian dish Chicken Tikka Masla. Good on the spicy level wasn't too insane as a mild/medium. Boyfriend got some spicier dishes that were too much for me. All in all I liked it. We'll be back. The only thing I didn't really care for was the cheese naan but I was just excepting more cheese. :)
(4)Laura B.
Try the lunch buffet! Many options (vegetarian and non-vegetarian). I was surprised to find this gem in a strip on the outskirts of downtown.
(4)Karen W.
So we've decided to give it a try and wow, it's just awesome overall. The service is great and we really like their lamb curry. there is also this cool gift shop inside the restaurant. The bread is absolutely yummy and did I mention they also serve buffet style lunch? Anyways, we highly recommend it to anyone who loves Indian food!
(5)Priyank K.
Wish to give zero. If u have little taste of Indian/ Nepalese cuisine kindly avoid this place, all veg. Menu is bad
(1)Chantel H.
This is one of my favorite places in Salt Lake City. Most of my friends and family have eaten here and love it. I can't speak to the authenticity, but i can speak to the deliciousness. Everything I've ever tasted is delicious, and they can make pretty much any dish as spicy or mild as you want. My personal favorite is the butter chicken with a few pieces of garlic naan. The Taj Mahal beer is also delicious!
(5)Eugenio V.
The people in the restaurant are from Nepal, the place is clean and with a lot of things from Nepal. Compared to the Himalayan Kitchen this place is humbler but more authentic. They even sell some merchandise. I bought a nice picture of mt. Everest. They had two wide screens with rolling pictures from their place. Went with two colleagues. I had the non-veg thali. A lot of food. The quality of the food was impressive, the service was great and the waiters were all very friendly and helpful. They had no problem explaining all the details about the food and the preparation. At lunch they serve a buffet. Definitively a place to go back.
(5)Kevin K.
Delicious food. I'd recommend anything Nepali - that's where they really shine. The Samosa Chat is a particularly good opener. Terrific momo (steamed dumplings). I'll definitely return whenever I'm in the area.

Today the roommate and I made our way to SLC for Kathmandu's lunch special. I was blown away!! The lunch special is the way to go. At $10 per person it's an excellent deal to sample a little (or a lot) of different things. As part of the buffet, you have access to a salad bar that isn't huge but super fresh veggies and a great selection. It had 2 or 3 different dressings, all delicious and 4 solid dipping sauces including mint chutney and tamarind. There were 3 different rice types: the usual white which was subpar in comparison to my jasmine rice at home, brown rice (very excellent, one of the best I've had) and the everest rice which had an interesting flavor but overall brown was my favorite. Their brown rice was not rough and dry like your typical brown rice but soft, moist and delicious. They had fresh naan and fried naans, fried potaoes, noodles, stir fried cabbage, delicious deep fried onions that were little pieces of heaven. They also had 7 or 8 different curries to choose from, 6 of which were vegetarian friendly so my meat-hating-plant-murdering roommate was as happy as pickles. I tried them all and they were all excellent choices. The coconut korma and chicken coconut korma were my favorites. Their dessert was simple. You have 2 choices of pudding: mango and rice, and eastern donut balls. The mango was superior, it could cut back on the sweetness but otherwise fantastic. I also loved checking out the little shop they got going on. They had little figures and t-shirts, even wall decors and jewelries to check out. Very cool stuff. Service was excellent so obviously their sucky staffs got replaced. Our waiter was as attentive and friendly as can be. He was there when he needed to be there, not more and not less. We were beyond pleased. Definitely worth checking out
(5)Emmoly D.
Their food is delicious! Each dish has it's own distinguished taste, unlike other places where everything taste the same or very similar. I would say their food is up high on my list of Indian places to eat at. Their portions come with a lot of meat. Big plus on that! Their spiciness level isn't as hot as other places. So if you like your curry medium, ask for medium hot. As for service, could be better. We got seated right away, but our server didn't take our order until we were sitting for about 15 minutes. When we ordered, I specifically asked for a lamb dish, but they brought out chicken. We also asked for sweet rice, but that wasn't brought out. The reason why it gets me mad is because he didn't write it down on anything and he confirmed with us 3x while taking our order. Dude, c'mon.. Regardless of the service, I would definitely come back for the food.
(4)Annie L.
I came here with my friends for their lunch buffet and I really enjoyed it! Some of my favorite dishes were the butter chicken, vegetable korma, Tandoori chicken, mango pudding, fried naan, and the vegetable noodles. The buffet was only $10 and there was a very good selection of very fresh food. I will definitely be coming back here for their lunch buffet!
(5)Brittany R.
They seated us right away. There was water in a pitcher at the table, love that. We waited a while to give our order though and the server wasn't friendly at all. every main course order comes with naan!!! We've been to a lot of Indian places and none have come with naan, you have to order it separate. Although I wish it came with dips. Food came pretty quickly but we couldn't find our server to get drink refills, so we asked a busboy who didn't really speak English but he understood enough. My chicken saag was amazing!! Hubby's tikka masala was NOT. He said he liked it but to me it tasted burnt. Like the bottom of the pan had scorched and they still used it. I was not impressed with his dish :( We could not find our server the entire time we were there. She would make an appearance about every 20 min but every time we needed something (mainly drink refills) she was never around and we had to ask someone else. She definitely didn't earn her tip but I was hoping the bussers would get some of it. I was hoping for something better here but they ended up with 3 stars...we won't be going back.
(3)Michele K.
Wonderful. Had butter chicken and mushroom masala. The waiters were helpful, the meal came with Naan bread and rice, and we were able to order spice on the side. Amazing food!!
(5)Howie O.
There are a ton of great indian food options in SLC and I would put this in the top 3. I have actually eaten here several times over the last few weeks and have enjoyed everything I have tried. The buffet runs until 2:30 if you want to try a bunch of different dishes.
(4)Laurie B.
My unfortunate admission before you read this review is that I am not much of an indian food connoisseur. So, the following may be more directed to someone who doesn't like spicy food, and who doesn't know much about Indian cuisine: Kathmandu was delicious! I got the chicken tikka masala and it was superb. The naan was mouth-watering, and the mango masala I tried a sip of was like drinking a mango. I asked for a zero on their spicy scale, and my nose didn't start running once. So, probably not the best review for an Indian food addict, but if you're looking for a caucasian-friendly menu, you should definitely try Kathmandu.

Googled for the best indian restaurant, found the kathmandu restaurant. Thought to give it a try and indeed it was the best I ever had in salt lake city. Servers are very nice and welcoming. Owner is very informational about the varieties of food as well as the cultures in South East Asia. I had the buffet and I bet there's no place like this in saltlake with fresh meal n cheap price. They also offer vegan n Gluten free. The best thing they had was the concern to my health n was very kind to ask if I was allergic to anything so they can offer alternatives.

This is a follow up review to a (five stars) review I wrote shortly after Kathmandu opened on Highland Drive. I've been a regular diner here since they opened, and as a Brit growing up in London I've eaten a lot more than my fair share of Indian food. Two caveats: I rarely eat lunch at Indian restaurants (and never at Kathmandu), and when I have, I notice that the buffet food offerings sometimes bear little resemblance to the evening a'la carte service. My comments here are strictly relating to the latter. Secondly, I've only frequented their Highland Drive location, never their second one (in the downtown area I recall). The good: Kathmandu still does a lot of the things that earned it fives stars back then. The menu still features Northern India / Nepali dishes that often aren't available at most other Indian restaurants, the beverage offerings are solid though unremarkable, and the room is a comfortable place in which to enjoy a meal. The bad: From the outset Kathmandu succeeded by offering good food at a good price point in a pleasant setting (as Indian restaurants go). What's caused me to change my rating from five to two stars are firstly (and it saddens me to say this), the food has gone perceptibly downhill, indeed has a slightly 'tired' feel to it (minus one star). My wife Jenny has a stronger opinion about this, described last night's food as "disappointing, really not good at all". For the record we shared the Chef's Special Thali, which literally means "large plate". We've ordered this often as it gives two diners a broad a mix of dishes to sample, as one might in a larger group sharing dishes. The lamb curry portion and daal were both terrific; but the chicken curry (a korma I believe) was mediocre, and the vegetable curry offering (an aloo korma dish, substituting for saag paneer as I have a cheese allergy) was memorably bad, stodgy and flavorless. Secondly, the service was weak (minus one star). Last night the restaurant was pretty empty with just five or six tables occupied, so no excuses there, but our vegetable platter appetizer arrived with no accompanying dips at all, and our waiter seemed to have a hard time understanding what we were asking for. When he did, it took four or five minutes to bring them out while the food got cold. Worse, the tandoori grill platter (part of the Special Thali) came out sizzling, but we had no plates, dips or chutney to accompany it, so we, and the now no longer sizzling tandoori grill platter just sat, and sat. Several minutes later the thali plates emerged, but the food on the platters was lukewarm at best, and the naan took several more minutes to arrive (hot at least). Conclusion: Many of the above comments could be overlooked were it the case of a restaurant having an "off night". This sadly is not the case, and in truth I've been slightly in denial about their food quality for a while. Last night was just yet again slightly worse than our previous visits. As for value (minus one star), last night's meal consisting of one appetizer shared by five people, one entree and two special thali's (equivalent to four entrees), and one cheap bottle wine came to close to $158 before tip. Our last takeout order for three people came to over $60 - not horribly expensive, but only justifiable if the food is top notch, as it was once. Their prices have steadily crept up over the last couple of years, and the value proposition here has unfortunately tilted away from them.

Came here for my bday lunch. I'd always heard how amazing it was. I hope it was just because I got the buffet but I didn't like anything I ate except the Dahl soup. Rubbery steamed naan. Long term steam table food. Rubbery hard fried snacks, I could go on. 2 buffets for $22 so that's not too bad. The host was nice the cashier barely even looked at us. I must have missed their heyday!!

I hate to sound so boring but I really love the lunch buffet here. I've been for dinner once and it was good, but I would prefer the buffet over that. It's really my own issue..I don't like to commit to just one dish. I like tasting and sampling the different ones, and I especially like those spicy marinated onions on the salad bar part of the buffet. Yummo. They have all of the basics you'd expect at an indian buffet, but the Nepalese things tossed in are great too. I love the deep fried puffy bread and choose it over naan every time. The fried onion thingies in chickpea flour (I think it's called bhaji) are to die for. I especially love that all dishes are labeled with ingredients, especially nuts, so for people with allergies you can rest a little easier here than most Indian restaurants. The service is always prompt and courteous and never pushy. My fav Indian in the valley for sure, hands down.
(5)Haley B.
I came to The Kathmandu yesterday after reading all the rave reviews about the lunch buffet. As they go, this one was satisfying! The buffet was well tended and had a wide selection. My personal faves were the butter chicken and (what I think was) saag paneer. That I don't know for sure is entirely my fault, as everything is clearly labeled. The naan was the only letdown. There were hundreds of little triangles of it sitting in a warmer that looking like they'd been there for days. It was greasy and unsatisfying. The service was prompt and friendly. Dirty plates disappeared seemingly out of their own volition. This was a great deal for the price. Check it out!
(4)Vida A.
Time for a update for this location. Since Tandoor is better I usually go there for lunch but my review of the day for the other location inspired me to drop by for lunch. Wow changes have occurred mostly with the staff that are very unfriendly especially the young lady who really made a mom uncomfortable as she was circling her holding her crying baby. It made me feel uncomfortable across the room, I cant imagine the mom and her party of 10. It's a buffet, people dont want to be monitored on how much food they are taking and it seems thats what the staff was doing. Food is fine but too many other Indian places to eat and not be treated bad. Pretty disappointed especially this region of people are usually so loving. Remember Free Tibet??
(3)Ashley D.
This place by far has the most vegetarian options on their lunch buffet. Everything is always amazing from their korma's to their Saag nothing ceases to amaze. I wish they had a location in Denver. I would recommend the Vegan Cashew Korma even if your not vegetarian it's filling and savory all at once.
(5)Anita C.
My go-to place whenever I am craving Indian food. Have been here many times for their lunch buffet and always leave on the brink of a food coma. The first thing that comes to mind is their butter chicken- the chicken is cooked perfectly and bathed in an amazing sauce. Their tandoori chicken is also very good. Their naan and fried naan are always cooked well. Just about everything they offer in their buffet is yum-o. Dessert options include gulab jaman, rice pudding, and mango pudding. The mango pudding is my fave! Ordered their chili chicken to go for dinner one night and it wasn't as good as I expected, maybe it was just one of their off nights. Definitely check this place out if you haven't been!
(4)Christina H.
The lunch buffet is devine(10$). Many different curries and dishes to choose from. I am an indian food addict and this is the best place I've been to in Salt Lake! I've never had fried naan before-- that was really a treat! Excellent and friendly staff! I really can't wait to go back. I would go everyday if I could. Its really hard to find delicious Indian food-- the blend of all the cultures in this restaurant is really cool! And delicious :)
(5)Xinmiao L.
Finally I did not work during lunch time, so I went out with a friend who is allergic to gluten. She suggested the place because it was close to her place and her husband and her can actually enjoy affordable, gluten free and actually delicious meal from this restaurant. We went during lunch buffet time. $10.99! Good deal! To me, their buffet choices are bit bigger than other Indian restaurant. (I think it is the salad bar) Anyways, I am a girl that hates salad. SKIP! And jumped right into the fried, stir-fry, and curry goodness! The buffet includes normal simple drinks but not mango lassi. So what the hell, why not! I want my mango lassi no matter what! I felt like every restaurant's mango lassi tastes different. This one is more creamy/yogurt-ly but I do like it. The servers were polite and nice. And all of them were wearing traditional Nepel clothing. Next time, I will drag my boyfriend here.
(4)Sam S.
The Kathmandu serves up some pretty good Nepalese and Indian food at this Highland Drive location. The chicken coconut korma was good--with a rich flavor and spice. The mango lassi was also good. Service was attentive and on point. Overall we had a good experience but I prefer the food at India House in Sandy.
(3)Amanda C.
Finding good Nepali food in Salt Lake is not an easy task. The Kathmandu however is amazing (which should be expected being named after the capital city). Everything I have had here has been delicious. My personal favorite is the momo's I have tried both the chicken and the lamb both living up the high standards I hold for momo's. They also come with a delicious sauce for dipping them in. Other dishes I have loved here are the chicken butter, vegetable samosas, naan, and the Gulab Jamun. I don't think you could go wrong with any of the curries. On top of the great food, they have an incredible atmosphere with Nepali music playing in the background and photos of Nepal playing on a TV. They service is quick and friendly.
(5)Michael A.
Nothing to complain about. For a lunch buffet first thought is quality lost. That's far from the truth. Nice stander salad bar with a few nice toppings extras. Great vegetarian selection as well as non-veg. Everything was full of flavor and prepared nicely. Will be a Weekly lunch diner the price was 10.43. Well worth it!
(5)N B.
I like the food at Kathmandu but not so sure I will go back and here's why: We just moved across the street and it has amazing reviews so we thought we would try it. The people there are not friendly. I'm talking about the staff and the patrons. My boyfriend and I walked in and everyone just stared. It was awkward to say the least. The restaurant is wide open so you stare at everyone eating. There are no partitions whatsoever. It's a giant dining room. And about the staff, It seems like Indian restaurants are just not very accommodating. The first time we attempted to eat here, we sat in a booth for a good 20 minutes before getting up and leaving. I needed help decoding the Indian menu, not to mention a freaking drink of water but I didn't get either. Not even a "be right there" look. Due to the reviews on yelp, I gave it a second chance, but this time I got take out so I wouldn't have to deal with Kathmandu's "service." When I was picking up my food, a couple came in to grab theirs and wished the man at the front a happy fourth of July. He joked after they left, under his breath, like why in the f do I care about the fourth of July? Happy fourth of July?! Ummm. hello?! Should I point out the obvious for you? We started with the naan. For my taste, it was a little overdone. It was dry and tasteless and I've had better naan packaged from the grocery store. It would be much better with some oils and sea salt or something. Next, the restaurant, from what I understand is family style. Their menu is very hard to interpret so we just picked a few things and went for it. We had the chicken tikka. a traditional, chicken chow chow, which was like an Indian lo mein and the chicken momo, little dumplings that were really quite yummy. Everything we sampled was yummy, but not worth the $50 I spent. I've been to Star of India and India House, both of which I thought were way less exaggerated and better tasting. I didn't have to deal with the hyped crowd at Kathmandu and it was around $35 for the same amount of food. I liked it overall, but don't expect to be wowed. It didn't really leave the great lasting impression that I craved.
(2)Sandi P.
This has quickly become my husband and I's go to place for dinner whenever we feel like eating out. All of our favorite Indian dishes, plus some delicious Nepali dishes we are slowly making our way through and trying. Have enjoyed everything we have ever ordered but my favorite is the Lamb Korma and my husband loves their Chicken Tikka Masala. If you like spicy, like we do, don't be afraid to kick it up to at least a Medium + !
(5)Guy P.
I was in the neighborhood and needed some take out. Called an order in and it took 30 minutes to get my order. I ordered the chicken Tikka Masala, a good stand by when trying a new Indian joint. The naan was decent but nothing to write home about. The Tikka was average at best. The food was ok, the real downside to the Kat was the price. $20 for Masala and Naan was just too much for this place. GP

This place is very confused, no clear identity....I felt like I was at some kind of bizarre Indian/Nepalese truck stop. Slow service, poor quality food. Doesn't even come close to comparing to other Nepalese food I've had around the country/world. I wouldn't recommend it and certainly would never go back.
(1)Billy W.
After going back food was still very good, but service had diminished in quality and they've increased their prices. For the amount of food you get it is starting to get over priced. Their food is still very good and I recommend trying it, but I just won't be going there as often.
(4)K B.
I used to go here regularly for the lunch buffet on Saturday (almost every weekend some months) and relished the flavors in the food and my brilliant decision to dip the fried naan into the mango pudding. But I stopped going recently because the restaurant seems to be slipping which I suspect has something to do with the opening of the second location. Things that used to taste consistently good (chicken tikka masala for one) don't anymore, and I find things seem not as fresh. The biggest turnoff was that the staff/owner seem to have let their guard down after the honeymoon period. I get irritated hearing loud conversations coming from the kitchen, or friends of the staff hanging out near the back, having staff vacuum while I'm eating, or walking in and seeing no one in sight to great me for what feels like forever. I think the biggest nail in the coffin for me was reading how their Salt Lake County restaurant health inspection reports have gotten worse in the last couple of years and it seems like whoever is being left to manage food safety is completely incompetent and dropping the ball. I won't be risking getting sick, so...no more Kathmandu for me. Off to other options....
(2)Abhishek G.
This is one of the best Nepalese restaurants I have ever eaten in and such an admission is worthy since I am from eastern India. Well, the food was just impeccable with some innovative creations and there was a distinct effort to highlight Nepalese influence contrary to most of the Nepalese places that pander to Indian palette most of the times. The Everest curries were outstanding as were the Methi Chicken, and the Qanti and to top it all the dahi-gulabjamun (woh that's a Michelin chef creation)!! Highly recommended! :)

I have been here several times--The location is right down the road from my house. They have a huge menu which includes a lot of vegetarian dishes, which I really appreciate. The service is always fast and friendly no matter how busy it is. I bring friends here often!
(5)Nathaniel D.
Good service, nice atmosphere, chicken coconut korma was by far the tastiest thing on the menu.
(4)Brianne C.
Delicious butter chicken and chewy naan with affordable prices make this my go-to Indian restaurant. Lunch buffet is worth a trip to sample items you wouldn't normally order.
(4)David J.
The lunch buffet is excellent but come here any time. The food is fun and delicious. This is a SLC treasure.
(5)Gordon L.
Love authentic indian curry? - look no further than Kathmandu. We had a coconut chicken korma and mild vindaloo, both were amazing! Normally I shy away from the mild butter/korma chickens but the karma was absolutely delicious! Spacious surroundings but with plain decor. Curry is one of the very best.

My children are not fond. Call it the kitty cat Mandu. They are Asian food fiends and love exerting from sushi to Sam pan to mi Thai. It's too bad.
(2)David E.
Indian food is comfort food to me. I find myself craving it more than I should and if it wasn't for my wife keeping me in check I would be here several times a month. I specially like Kathmandu's lunch buffet, which is only 10 bucks. The food is great and every time I come here the service is great.

Didn't live up to the hype. Chicken in both dishes overdone and tough in fact one dish was like jerky. Flavors were not anything worth coming back for even the samosas & naan were let downs. Only high point was the fried onion. We won't be back Didn't live up to the hype. Chicken in both dishes overdone and tough in fact one dish was like jerky. Flavors were not anything worth coming back for even the samosas & naan were let downs. Only high point was the fried onion. We won't be back

This place is one of the best go for lunch! The buffet is great and has several dishes to choose from, all at a great price. I love the service too, they are attentive and buffet is always stocked. Will be going back to Kathmandu!
(5)E M.
Really good food. Terrific flavors across the menu. Chicken Butter, the Kormas and Saag paneer were all terrific.
(4)Freedom F.
Amazing hospitality but food sucked. Ordered two Indian curried and they were exactly the same. Their rice was little undercooked. Not a place I would return to.
(2)Lori W.
Great place! Samosa chat for app and vegetable coconut korma (I dream about it) are my favorites. Tandoori chicken is also yummy. Food is always good, the spice level can vary a bit. They have a friendly staff and we're never waiting for a table. They also do an excellent job with take out.

Ended up hitting this place on a Saturday for the lunch buffet. It was awesome, we will be back often. 1. Service: Exceptional 2. Food: Excellent 3. Ambiance: See 1 and 2, who cares
(4)Thomas J.
Amazing, enough said. Hard to find good Indian Food
(5)J N.
Nice place! I loved the atmosphere, the service was good and the chai teas was satisfying. We ordered the spinach and cheese, the vegetable curry and the malai kofta. All were good.

This is me and my sister's new favorite spot in SLC. We've been here 3 times in the last couple of months and have been pretty happy at each visit. Food: We always get matar mushroom, but we've also tried the potato masala, chickpea curry, as well as the eggplant curry dish. All have been very good, not too spicy but definitely flavorful. They don't give a lot of rice off the bat, but you can always ask for more. The dishes come with naan, but if you want to make it a specialty naan, you pay $1 extra. I sometimes think that's pretty steep. But the naans are good - we've tried the sweet one, the garlic and regular naan, all delicious. I also like that they have a dairy-free mango lassi. Service: There's always at least 3 people walking around, not including the owner, to make sure that everyone is taken care of. I also like that they leave a pitcher of water on each table - I can refill as I please. We've yet to try something from the Himalayan menu. It's just so hard to steer away from our favorites. Oh and another plus, this place is open on Sundays! Hallelujah, Utah.

OK. Honestly, I have to admit that when I first saw the advertisements and reviews for Kathmandu, I was incredibly incredulous. "The most authentic Nepali food in Salt Lake." Really? Sorry. I just couldn't wrap my head around it. Finding authentic Thai or Chinese food in Salt Lake was already challenging enough, despite the vast plethora of Thai and Chinese food places. So Nepali food? Well, that was before I took my first bite. Once I sank my teeth in, I was instantly transported back to the subcontinent. What I found interesting was that Kathmandu's Indian cuisine was even better than that to be found at Indian restaurants, even though Kathmandu's specialty was really Nepali. But anyway, I ordered a butter chicken (on the Indian menu side) and an Everest paneer (on the Nepali menu side). Both were absolutely DELICIOUS! The BEST subcontinent food I have had in a VERY long time. I mean, it was just so perfect. I had ordered the butter chicken medium spicy, and it was just that. Definitely not mild but not overpowering. Just "medium." One thing about it though. It was not the equivalent of chicken makhani, which is usually translated as "butter chicken." So my expectations were a bit off. The sauce was a bit more along the lines of tikka masala...in terms of color and texture...but oh, was it GOOD! It was SO CREAMY!!! The Everest paneer had the word mango written all over it in the description, and since I LOVE mango, I decided to go for that one. And that one was perfect as well. Sweet and tangy with a consistency not too watery but not too viscous. I don't know what they did or put in it to make its consistency so perfect. And what blend of sugar and spice to make the taste so balanced. This might be a moot point, but even the basmati rice was very good. It wasn't over or undercooked, and I'm sorry, but that happens A LOT at Indian restaurants. So kudos for that. And the servers were so soft spoken. Very willing to serve but left you alone most of the time so you could eat. But just the attitude and presentation also reminded me a lot of servers back on the subcontinent. What's more, the price was just right. For what you got, that is, an entree, unlimited rice, and a full order of naan for about $12, it was a bargain! I'd challenge anyone to find another place that threw in naan while charging that price! It truly was an amazing experience. Oh, I just can't wait to go back!
(5)S W.
Just got back from lunch here and I got to say what a deal! I'm not the most knowledgable when it comes to Indian/Nepali cuisine so going through the menu was a lost effort. Fortunately, they have a buffet that is only $10! I wanted to try a little bit of everything and the buffet did just that. Tried goat, butter chicken, naan, some of the fried potatoes (the best) and some other things. Before I continue, skip the salad, it's not worth the stomach space. The service was lacking. When we got there it took about 20 minutes for a waiter to get our orders. Then when leaving, took us about an extra 30 minutes to get the check. The time frames weren't what I had in mind, but oh well. I would recommend this place to anyone in the neighborhood looking for something completely different from other places her in SLC. Definitely worth checking out!
(4)Jimmy V.
Came here from NY for work and my co-workers and I wanted Indian food so here we are! We decided to get the bread basket which was made of a cornucopia of different types of naan an I got the Baltin special for the entree. Although the restaurant wasn't particularly busy when we went, the read basket took a long time to come out but at least the naan was tasty. As for the entree, it was good but I wanted spicy and got the spiciest level for Indian food there. Overall, it was a good meal but my mouth was on fire by the end so be careful what you wish for!

This is a family favorite restaurant and is unique in that they offer all sorts of Indian and Nepali cuisine. Fortunately I live just 3 minutes away. Kathmandu is a fantastic little secret in SLC... not as popular as some fancy-schmancy Indian places that are nearby, but the food is exceptional every time we go, and it's quite affordable too. The lunch buffet is a must! If you're not big on Indian or other ethic food, don't fear Kathmandu. This place can spice things up or down on your request. We've taken our kids (ages 7, 5, and 3) and they LOVE the food. Try the Vegetable Cocunut Korma or Everest Chicken... as usual, the meals come with sides of warmly baked naan.
(5)Juliet H.
by far the best meal we have had this whole trip! Came here for Presidents' Day weekend. service was great. food was even better. I don't think I've had better Indian/Nepal food like this in Cali. closest to taste I've had beside my old roommate in college home cooking Indian food was in London. my favorite dish we had was the coconut curry prawns and the eggplant. my friends tried the Everest lamb, butter chicken and an okra dish. if you want it really hot gotta ask for Kathmandu hot. when I return for our next snowboarding trip this place will sure see us again!
(5)Miranda R.
Salt Lake doesn't skimp on Indian food and Kathmandu is no exception. We ate with a large group of about 20 and the service was sublime. Our waiter offered recommendations, as many of us had never been there before, and all his suggestions (especially the lamb paneer and veggie samosa) were a hit! I generally judge an Indian restaurant by the quality of their nann and Kathmandu lived up to my high standards. Never been? Go. Go now!
(5)Carrie P.
I don't have Indian type food often, but my husband loves it. A girlfriend and I decided to try. I got chicken coconut something, and I loved it. My husband loved the leftovers as well! Tiny bit pricey for the amount of food, but pretty close to fair. Great service, and very helpful to newbies who are clueless about the new food! I would definitely recommend, and will be taking my husband soon :)

I haven't been to many Indian restaurants, but this is easily the best one. I've been there both for the lunch buffet and regular dinner menu. The lunch buffet is really great, especially since as a vegetarian, they have a section that is specifically labelled as such. The buffet is an amazing deal, although my only gripe is that all the vegetarian dishes are mild, and I love my Indian food very spicy. My favorite dish is the coconut korma, it's so insanely good. I also recommend the saag paneer if you like spinach. There's also a vegetarian platter that you can get that has the coconut korma, saag paneer, and a bean dish (the last one I'm not as big of a fan of). Another thing that they really excel at here is their sauces. They also give you free naan at dinner, which isn't something every Indian place does. Their desserts are also really good. If you like Indian food, or if you've never had it and looking to try, this is definitely the spot to go!
(5)Lizzie W.
I've eaten a lot of Indian/Nepalese food in the past 2 months, and with that said I'm now ready to give a better, more informed review. Unfortunately, nothing has changed rating wise, Kathmandu still garners a 3 star review. I had the Onion Bhaji, Lamb Chili that came with Naan and Rice. The Onion Bhaji and Lamb Chili were both significantly better. The chili has a very nice flavor accompanied by perfect spicing (I went with medium) And yet the Naan and Rice were both bland, which just put a damper on the meal as a whole. There are a lot of options here (vegetarian/vegan), and pricing is reasonable, but the service is bad (never received drink refills/confusing) and the staples (grainy rice and flavorless naan) leave much to be desired at the The Kathmandu. I'm sticking to Bombay House.
(3)Williams J.
My friends and I enjoyed the Lunch Buffet, fantastic choices and each one unique and flavorful! VeryYummy! I've been here many times for lunch it's always great!
(5)Joshua B.
The buffet was, for a lack of better words, gross. It tasted like it had been there for a long time without being replaced. Some of the dishes just tasted wrong. The restaurant also seemed dirty as if it had not had a deep cleaning for a very long time. Will not be going back.
(2)Angel W.
GREAT Indian food here! I love the atmosphere the waiters are all cute and helpful. But best of all is the food... I love the Lamb Tiki Masala and the butter Chicken!
(5)Stuart J.
My family and I love Kathmandu, we went on a whim and it's become a family favorite. Very authentic, can be quite spicy, and get lots of naan, it's always good! Update. - Be patient with the servers, as they are very authentic but know what they are doing and will serve you well, literally. I heard some people complaining about them, but they do a really good job.
(5)Stuart M.
It seems like the Kathmandu has finally started to settle down. Since our last few poor take out orders, we gave the place a miss for a few months. Lately we've tried the dine in experience a couple of times, and all have been great like our first few times. They seem to have grappled their service issues which was one of the biggest issues I had with dine in here. Ive noticed a few new staff members too, which seems to have helped. I'm now quite happy to recommend this place. Kathmandu is now my pick for the the best place to grab some tandoori meats and a cool taj mahal in the Sugarhood area.
(4)Steve C.
Great food. friendly service. I have eaten here about eight times in the past year. whether it has been the lunch buffet, dine-in, or take-out the food has been great.
(5)Harsha R.
A couple of guys who were a part of Himalayan Kitchen (before HK moved to their new location in mid-2009) opened this place last month. Not surprisingly, the quality of food remains top notch. These guys know a thing or two about cooking good, tasty sub-continental food. They serve both Nepali and Indian cuisine. The place is spacious, well-lit and the service is good. I was here for dinner recently. Tried the Everest chicken, which is a little sweet but goes well if you ask them to make it hot. Also, had paneer chilli, which I could tell was going to be plain awesome from the moment the server kept it on the table! They were inconsistent with their naans but thats alright, Kathmandu did enough to move right up in my list of Indian restaurants in the valley!
(4)Tara N.
We went for dinner and can't get enough of this place. The Chicken Butter and Chicken Korma are the most heavenly things we have ever put to our lips! The spice level is a little dicey - a '5' out of '7' was outrageously hot - so now we stick with 'a little above medium' when we order.
(5)Bud H.
This place has always treated me right - from the lunch buffet to the regular menu. You can't go wrong with the Onion Bhaji (served with three different dips) or the "bread basket" (an assortment of flavored naan). I love the Methi Fenugreek Chicken, a Nepali dish that is quite exceptional. I also enjoy the traditional Chicken Tikka Missala from the Indian side of the menu as the chicken has a smoky, tandoor flavor. All in all, a great place for Nepali or Indian food.
(4)Merecedes G.
Love love love this place. I crave it. BEST naan ever. Huge menu with so many delicious choices. I have not had a bad meal yet! They have fun coupons for a free entree and the staff (Santa) is so nice and just a great person. I can't wait to go back and try more amazing curries. Best Indian in SLC. Finally found a place for my Indian food fix. Yippee!
(5)Gabby P.
As a British girl I am very picky about my Indian food. Kathmandu is INCREDIBLE! Amazing service, the best Indian food in SLC, and you can always get a table even though I have never been when they aren't busy.
(5)Richard L.
Best Indian, Nepalese food! This is my sixth time back and not my last! Amazing coconut Korma, Lamb Rogan Josh, nan. You really can't go wrong.
(5)Geoff W.
Let me start by expressing my gratitude and saying that it is such a relief that you've got experienced insider local restauranteur people in town putting out this type of food and not charging an arm-and-a-leg for it, like some other Indian/Himalayan joints in town. Thanks for keeping the prices down, Kathmandu management. Onto the food: The lunch buffet is fantastically mesmerizing, with a stunning array of exquisitely-cooked dishes, salads, condiments, appetizers and breads. I don't know how they pull it off with all this variety every day, but they're obviously doing something right back in the kitchen, because the food's good there time-after-time, whether you're there for lunch or dinner. Generally speaking, the food quality has improved drastically since they first opened, as has the service! The Indian-style dishes are a perfect thickness now, very nicely flavored, and there is an impressive variety on the menu, to ensure something suitable for anyone who comes in. The quality has remained consistent, on top of it, and there is a pleasant, unpretentious ambiance in the place (I can only speak for the Highland Drive location, as I have not yet been to the new one), as well as friendly service. I prefer Kathmandu to any of the others at this point, but will indeed have numerous alternate choices, should they decide to start raising their prices through the roof, like their suddenly numerous competitors all have. I sincerely hope they keep it affordable, as this is right toward the top of the list of all of the really neat things these guys have going over at Kathmandu. And I wish the management good luck with the new location (700 East, 200 South). But my advice to them is: Don't get greedy and start spreading yourselves too thin opening a bunch of new locations (Just look at what happened to Cafe Trang). As they say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" I have also noticed a few minor problems with consistency here and there when I've picked up food to go (***SEE MY TANDOOR INDIAN GRILL REVIEW- 03/02/12), though I don't think it's anything to be concerned with just yet. At least, not enough to drop a star yet. Kathmandu is still currently the best restaurant of it's kind in town, but will only remain so if the prices stay reasonable. The fourth star is there primarily for this reason. If the prices go up, I might as well head over to the Himalayan Kitchen. REMEMBER: Keep it cheap, and we will come. Cheers!
(4)Katie M.
Food was excellent - had the lamb curry & butter chicken. Staff was friendly and the food was pretty quick. Will be coming in again for sure
(5)Nicole F.
I have only ever had their lunch buffet. It is very vegan friendly and informed staff that can tell you what in the line is vegan. They usually don't have vegan bread, but will make some and bring it to you for no charge. It costs $10, which is a pretty good deal in my book. The food itself is pretty good. The mango rice and the spicy curry veggies are two of my favorites.
(4)Belange H.
Ambiance: Clean and open space, however there's a strong smell if you're not accustomed to Indian food. Service: Very friendly service, the waiter even voluntarily took a dish back because it was too spicy and toned it down for us. Food: Loved the shrimp korma and chicken masala. Tandoori chicken was a bit dry and salty and we got a noodle dish that was unbearably hard to like, the flavors just did not work together. (Vegetable chow chow). 50% of the meal was spectacular while the other 50% was just so-so. Likes: I liked that the naan and the rice were both included with the entrees, unlike other Indian places that charge separately for the naan or rice. Also, the servers are not stingy about the wine servings. We got wine glasses that were generously filled to the top!

I've had two experiences at The Kathmandu. The first time I had ordered take out. As someone who used to live in Nepal, I love the Nepali staple meal of dal bhat-- curried veggies, dal (lentil soup), and rice, with a few extras served on a giant platter. The Indian counterpart is referred to, generally, as Thali. You can get dal bhat for about 70 to 200 rupees in Nepal, depending on the restaurant, etc. That's about $1-3 USD. AND it comes with refills, too. Of course, SLC is not Nepal, but I was shocked to find when I picked up the "Nepali Thali"-- AKA dhal bhat-- the meal was over $18 USD! And the quality was poor, indeed. Dal bhat varies on its tastiness by who is preparing it, but I was thoroughly disappointed with what seemed to be an Americanized dal bhat for palettes that cannot handle spice. My second experience with the restaurant was dining in. I think it's important to patronize local businesses owned and operated by Nepalis, but this experience was also not up to par. While the staff are very generous and kind people (one of them gave me a free Nepali desert after conversing with him in my broken Nepalese), the food was tasteless. I love a good chicken tikka massala, but this dish was a creamy mess that tasted like nothing. Later in the evening, I felt a bit queasy, too. Verdict: I love the people who work there, but if you want authentic Nepali make friends with Nepali folks and ask to eat what they eat every day. I can guarantee you it's not pizza, but some tasty dal bhat I wish they'd share with the rest of us.

My skinny girlfriend is extremely picky and always complains. When we ate here today she just said "awesome!"
(5)Codicho Z.
Yo 3.75 rating. When will yelp go to 10 point system please. difficult to rate on 5 stars.
(4)Ciara H.
This is genuinely the best food that I have ever had at a restaurant...ever. They have such a huge selection, and all of it is freaking delicious! It makes me so sad that this restaurant is not in Colorado.
(5)Whitney S.
Great, huge menu of Nepali & Indian dishes - both vegetarian and carnivore options. Try their Samosa Chat - to die for. Everest Chicken is one of their best dishes that I've tried. Their lamb and chicken is very juicy - never dry. The curry sauces can be a tiny bit oily sometimes, but usually they're good quality. Service is spectacular, fast, and the servers and very kind. I've gone here at least 20 times and do not plan on stopping - always great service and food.
(5)Nimay L.
I have been here for two times in pass a month. The food was very good and it has many selections of food, including Indian and Nepali food. Their appetizers are very delicious. I have tried onion bhaji and vegetable pakora with green and brown sauces. I love the sauces a lot. They are very match with the flavor and the green sauce make the deep fried appetizer lighter, so you won't feel too greasy after few bites. We have tried both Indian and Nepali dishes. My friend loves their lamb mushroom and I like to try different dishes every time. All of them are pretty good and very authentic. The good thing is if you order their main dishes, they always come with naan and rice. You don't have to pay extra to get naan. Their naan is good and you can taste the fresh flavor of flour. I love to have naan with my main dishes. The service is very good. Every waiter and waitress here are very nice and always smile to you. The other good thing is that they will give you a coupon for next visit, so you can buy 2 entrees and get 1 for free. My friend and I use it for our second visit and take the leftover home for good meals later. I think I will go back again before my coupon expire and get one more for next time.
(5)natalie s.
We eat here ALL the time - it's that good! Keep in mind when you go here that it's not an Indian restaurant, but does serve delicious Indian food. Some of it may taste a little different than what you are used to, but it's seriously fantastic. The Nepalese dishes are all really unique and delicious. The menu also has great options for people with food allergies, or that are vegetarian. Service is always quick and the space is so big, you rarely wait for a table. Great spot all around.
(5)Julie R.
I love Kathmandu. The employees are so nice there, and the food is delicious. Chewy naan, spicy curries and always a very good quality. We get take out often from here and have never been dissapointed. No, I take that back, my BF is always dissapointed there isn't more bread left for him!
(5)Dean M.
This place is amazing. Fantastic, friendly, helpful service, and the most delicious food you could ask for. Chicken coconut korma is my fav, and the samsosa's for an appetizer are a great starter.
(5)Alan C.
The best I've had! I have only eaten there once so far and it's already my favorite Indian food restaurant in SLC, San Jose, and Southern California. I tried the Chicken Coconut Korma at my waiter's suggestion and it was fantastic! I also had a mango lassi, which was good. I'll be going back.
(5)Ziyad L.
I tried this place after my fiancee read the reviews. Wow! This tasted better than mom's. Everyone should come here to adjust their taste buds to what Indian food should taste like. Chicken curry and chicken tikka masala. Naan was on point and verge samosa was perfect
(5)Bryan M.
My wife and I decided to try this place out today. They offer a lunch buffet which we've been wanting to try. It's such a great way to try new foods without the pressure of ordering a full plate of something you may not like. We were greeted right as we came in. The staff was very helpful and courteous. We have a 17-month old, so dining out can sometimes be a challenge, but the staff was very friendly with our kid as well. Of course, it doesn't hurt that he's adorable, but that's neither here nor there ;). The decor leaves a bit to be desired, since the only real decorations are posters, but that doesn't really matter because the food was SO good! They offer a few Indian type salads. I went out on a limb and tried a spicy chickpea curry salad. It was an odd sensation to be eating something curry flavored cold, but once I got over that, I really enjoyed the salad. The warm items were fairly varied. There was butter chicken, of course, along with curried potatoes and peas. I wish they'd offered a chicken tikka masala too. There was also an amazingly delicious saag. Naan, both baked and fried were offered. I was so happy to finally not have to pay $1 per naan like you do at Bombay House. For you veggies out there, they had quite a few dishes sans meat. My favorite new dish was the Nepalese Black Lentils. Lots of curry and spice, but it didn't burn up my palate. They also offered a small dessert bar which offered "Kathmandu Dessert" which is some type of fried dough, covered in coconut, mango pudding and rice pudding. All of which were amazing. My wife and I couldn't stop eating the Kathmandu Dessert. My wife and I really loved this place. We got to try a few new dishes we might not otherwise have eaten and all this for only $20 for the two of us. I hope they stay around for a long time and avoid the curse of the ill-fated Bangkok Thai!
(5)Sarah C.
The food was blah. Blah at an Indian/Nepalese joint? Yup. Even the dish which we ordered as "hot" (the rest were medium) were still watery, without the rich thickness of curries elsewhere in SLC. The exception would be the chicken tikka, which was very moist and quite delicious. My lamb rogan josh, however, was pretty bland. My mango lassi was extremely over-sweetened as well, which was very sad for me as I love lassi so much. Overall, the food wasn't "bad" it was "blah"... could be fixed easily by the cooks I am sure, as nothing was fundamentally wrong with it. The service was both friendly and condescending. I do not like my order being second-guessed by my waiter without good reason, and our waiter asked EACH of us after we ordered our food if we were "sure" we wanted that dish, asking "Have you had it before?", and if we were "sure" we wanted it at medium/hot. He did this even after being told that everyone at the table loves Indian and Nepalese food, and we are very familiar with it. Otherwise, the service was friendly, if a bit awkward. The restaurant itself would do well to re-think its layout, and perhaps draping some fabrics from the ceiling... it feels like a warehouse full of small tables currently. It was uncomfortably cavernous. If they gave the place a posh interior, and amped the flavor up a tad, (and kept the bloody sugar out of my lassi) I think Kathmandu would be great, but as it stands I have no reason to go there.
(2)Kiesha J.
Great food, great service, friendly staff. Had read Ted Sheffler's review of Kathmandu in City Weekly and decided to give it a go. We arrived and the restaurant was completely empty. The host was friendly and let us sit where we wanted to. He asked us if we had tried Nepalese food (we had) before and gave us a list of suggestions completely new to us. He suggested their top seller, The Everest Chicken but I wasn't in the mood for sweet so we ordered the Chicken Chilli and the Lamb Rogan Josh with veggie samosas to start. In the midst of our ordering the restaurant became quite a bit busier, we assumed the one server working would have his hands full but he didn't miss a beat and continued to lavish attention on us. He refilled our drinks every time he walked past the table, and checked in on us every chance he had. As for the food- Lamb Rogan Josh is my go to dish at every Indian restaurant I go to. Theirs had wonderful flavor and the pieces of lamb were perfection. Usually it's pretty hit and miss with lamb but each piece was tender and perfect. I'd give their Rogan Josh a B+ because it was a lot greasier than it should have been. Now for the star of the meal....Chicken Chili. Jeesus almighty this was amazing. My poor husband had to ask me to stop eating all of his. Chicken marinated in yogurt then deep friend and tossed with a chickpea and chili mash. Seriously to die for. One thing I'd mention is The Kathmandu knows legit HOT. I am a fan of spicy, I'd say I can handle more spice than most people I know. I order hot at every Indian/Nepalese restaurant I go to and it's usually not enough for me. At Himalayan Kitchen I even have to ask them to double the amount of chili they normally put in for hot dishes. I asked for hot here, and I was pleasantly surprised. Our server mentioned it was quite hot and asked if I'd prefer medium and I politely declined. Hot was perfection. At least for me. Husband was covered in sweat and had a bit of the nose drip. The staff came out to chit chat and teased him a bit over that. It was a great time, we'll definitely be back.
(4)James H.
Fantastic food! The owner is awesome. Happy to have such great food so close by.
(5)Rob W.
Friendly service, but the food is rather hit or miss. The samosas were just average, as was the chicken "chilli", but the Everest chicken was very flavorful. The naan bread served with the meal was just like breakfast cereal -- cold, dry and crunchy. The Kathmandu is a decent choice for a low-key, non-fussy meal; I wouldn't choose it for a special occasion such as impressing a date though.
(3)Neha S.
Delicious food and friendly staff. Would recommend the methi chicken and chicken momos.
(4)Connie C.
Indian and Nepali, it just doesn't get any better! The food rocks, for more info see my full review, foodlyspeaking.blogspot.… The service is great, family owned. Atmosphere and price are right on! My favorite Indian in SLC!
(5)Stephanie D.
Unbelievable service, very clean, and delicious/flavorful food! I've been to the downtown location twice and have been pleased every time. You can tell that the staff takes great pride in quality food and service they provide. Absolutely have to try it if you like this type of food!
(5)Alice Y.
I was a bit dubious after walking into this place. It was a little before 5pm and the place was completely empty save one couple dining in one of the booths. Despite this, my husband and I were standing around waiting to get seated, and nobody had greeted us yet. One of the waitresses was admittedly very very green, but the selection was great and the food was absolutely delicious. We even got a free treat at the end- a new dessert that they were testing out before offering on the menu! And the naan. So delicious. Soooo sooo delicious.

I just ate at the new Kathmandu 2. 200S 700E @ The Sunflower Market Center. It had so many different options Nepali, Tibetan, and Indian. Fantastic food. Plenty of free parking.

Delicious food. Service can be on the slow side.

Anytime my husband and I are in a new city we find an ugly, unkempt little place with cheap, spicy, delicious Indian dropped on the table by angry servers. Well, we couldn't find our Holy Grail of inexpensive eateries here in Salt Lake City but we found the second best thing: a clean, well-decorated restaurant with polite employees who always make sure your water glass is full and the food is to your taste. They actually charge what the food is worth, leading my husband and I to spend $30 - $70 anytime we eat here. That can include beer, appetizers, dessert, and sometimes a third entree for lunch the following day. They adjust the spiciness to your comfort level, but their grades of spice are perhaps different than the average American's. We ordered our entrees very spicy, and won't be making that mistake again! I would recommend starting at a medium spice level to see how you feel.

This place is amazing and compared to the Bombay House, which I used to adore, soooo much better. Great ambiance, amazing spices, good prices, and great staff. My family had the Everest Chicken and and Lamb dish, which they raved about. As a vegetarian, there were so many options to choose from...so far I've had the veggie momos (so light, not doughy like others), the pumpkin curry, the baighan bartha (sp?), vegetable coconut kurma, both dals, the okra, and the chana paneer masala...TO DIE FOR. The later is definitely my favorite Indian food dish that I've ever had...in and outside of the US. LOVE IT!

Okay service, but not good food..... Should not be City Weekly's Best Indian of Salt Lake. So disappointed...

6 of us went for dinner and shared our meals. Great food, good value, very attentive service and really appreciated wine and beer being available.

I just tried out the new Kathmandu downtown (7th E 2nd S) and it was awesome!! All of the food was delicious, great quality and good presentation. The staff were all very friendly. I love Indian food, and Kathmandu has lots of it, in addition to Nepali & Tibetan! I'm looking forward to sampling their lunch buffet soon!

I was excited to try this place to sample some Nepali things and because of its consistently high reviews though I wasn't too sure how much it would differ from Indian. If there is a difference then it must be on the menu. The lunch buffet is the exact same stuff you get at other Indian buffets, not one item looked unfamiliar. I've been to India so I have pretty high expectations when it comes to the food. We showed up Monday at about 1pm and the place was jam packed. The staff seemed to be pleased by this and didn't appear annoyed by the crowded lobby. This was a plus because I have been to other Indian joints where the staff was less than warm but the food is almost too good to be true. The Kathmandu experience was vice versa, very prompt and friendly service but the food lacks quality. The chicken curry was watery. It lacked richness, flavor, and the chicken had a weird texture. The tandoori chicken didn't even get a second chance. And the Naan, geez, it just looked pathetic. Tiny little strips of dry paper thin naan. The rice was uneatable by my 6 year old daughter's standards. Everything tasted the same; there was just no kick in the spices. Adding a heavy dose of mint chutney and jalapeño sauce helped a lot, but unfortunately I was already on my 4th plate before discovering this. I almost considered 3 stars because of the variety, they do have a large selection and you will have to be able to down at least 4 plates to try everything. I would consider trying it again if it was more appropriately priced at about $7.50 to $8.00 rather than $9.75. I'm not saying I'd never go back but the fact of the matter is that if it's lunch time on Monday through Friday and you want to stuff yourself with Indian food, there is absolutely no reason you should be here. India House is superior by leaps and bounds in flavor and at a lower price.

By far the best Indian food in SLC! Great service too!

I'd say this was one of the better Indian joints in Salt Lake mostly because their naan was the lightest and flakiest I've ever had. Didn't like the large chunks of ginger in the chicken vindaloo though.

The food here is pretty good and the service is even better. This place is close to my work, so it's always easy to get here.

Great food and truely outstanding service! I will be back for sure. The Nepalise food was outstanding, and while the Indian food is great here as well, I would suggest trying the specialties from Nepal. The staff here will go above and beyond to make your experience a great one!

On our most recent visit, we started w/ih the server's recommendation, Kathmandu Samosa Chat, it was delicious, strange textures and flavors, but great. We also had the Chicken Tikka, the chicken and fresh veggies had a nice char to it, Chicken Korma that was rich and creamy & Kalo Dal was pretty good, vinegarry.

My work buddies have taken me here a few times and it has been great every time.

Great buffet, lots of vegetarian options with great customer service. Pleasantly surprised with this place. Definitively recommend it.

Really yummy Indian... It's very similar to Himalayan Kitchen, but slightly cheaper. :)

Really enjoyed it. Nice staff. I think the Nepalese portion of the menu is better than the Indian portion, but good food all around. I will go again.

I've tried most of the Indian places in Salt Lake and so was excited to find somewhere close to the new house to try. Very impressed. They have a large menu and are reasonably priced. I tried the Saag Paneer and was glad to see nice large pieces of real paneer. Definitely will eat here again. Would like to see them improve their wine menu though.

Met some girlfriends here for the lunch buffet and had great food, not all of us are adventurous eaters, but everyone left happy. Can't wait to go back for more!

Having live in the SF Bay Area for more than two decades, my Indian restaurant experience is pretty varied and extensive. Visiting SLC in early October, I had a real hankering for Indian food since we had left the SF Bay area more than 3 months earlier. I did a search on Indian restaurants in SLC, when we were in Montana a month before our SLC visit, and came across The Kathmandu. My mouth was watering for the month preceding our visit. It was nice to not be disappointed after having that kind of a buildup/expectations. I had the Chicken Chilli. I basically lived in Thailand for a period of time and love spicy, flavorful food. The Kathmandu delivered in spades. The vegetarian somosas were good, not greasy. The star of the meal was the Chicken Chilli. My wife ordered her standard comparison dish (whatever is similar to palak paneer) and was raving about it....between trying to spear some chicken chilli off my plate. The service was outstanding (also rare at SF Bay area Indian restaurants), the staff knowledgeable and the wine list was very good. While I'm usually reticent to recomment restaurants to friends, I have recommended this to numerous friends who travel to SLC often. I look forward to hearing their raves.
